April 12th 2010 – Volume 2

The month of March has been and gone and with it the start of another year at the yellows. Heading into our 133rd season we look to build from last year’s results both on and off the playing fields. This year’s senior rugby teams have a younger look to them. The retirement of Paula Maisiri and Glen Hill and the promotion of our Turbo’s Nick Crosswell to the Hurricanes and Aaron Smith to the Blues wider training squad has however given opportunities to our 2009 colts graduates to impress and cement a spot in the senior ranks of the club.

Of the 2009 colts, two players have stood out so far. Dylan Marino the wiry no nonsense flanker come lock and twin brother of Kere Marino has been taking his opportunities and Harley Cribb has been impressing with his speed, elusive running and determined defense. We also welcome Paora Rakatau from the 2009 FAHS 1st XV, a player of immense promise.

The ever green Brad Carr is back to his mercurial best and has been in sublime form so far. The club is glad to see he has fully recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out for half of last season. In the last two weeks we have been blessed to have Nick Crosswell back playing club rugby after missing selection for the Canes and having the bye last weekend.

Even with Nick Crosswell back the results for the Senior 1 side have not been what might have been expected. The lack of experience up front, lack of team work, and ill discipline have let the team down. The results for the Senior 1’s so far this season are played 3 Won 0 Lost 2 and drawn 1.

Despite the performance of the Senior 1 support at the club continues to be good and player numbers are high through the other grades. The Senior 2 side, apart from a hiccup at Derby Day has been performing well so far this season and again this year we are fielding 2 colts’ teams and, despite a slow start, both look impressive.

OLD TIMER’S DAY (SAT, MAY 8th, vs Te Kawau)

We have a cracker of a day planned for Old Timers Day this year. So pencil it in your calendar now! Last year was a huge success with past players and members turning up from all over the country. Let’s see if we can top it this year on May the 8th when the Yellows take on Te Kawau at home.  Once again Barry Kitchen has been hard at work already organizing this day and arranging guest speakers. He will be making contact soon but you can help Moo by spreading the word.  If you are interest and would like more details, please contact Barry on 0273584908.

PRESSIES 30 year REUNION – QUEENS BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

Yellows PRESIDENTS is proudly 30 years old this year. They have had a lot of fun over the years. Phil Allen is heading up a committee to organize a reunion of the Yellow Pressies rugby teams from the past 30 years and has penciled in Queens Birthday Weekend for a shin dig. If you are interested please get in touch with Phil Allen 0273168660 or see him at the Empire Tavern.

 FUNDRAISING

Mark Ayres is running a major club-wide raffle in March and April. Tickets are selling for only $5 each and there is a limit of 1000 tickets. First prize is a very attractive travel package worth $1500 to be drawn on the 24th of April after the OBM game at home. Tickets have been allocated out to all teams (rugby and netball) for selling.  The 100 club is in full swing this year and has been supported well. Congratulations to our two winners so far this season who have walked away with $250 cash. Remember you must be at the clubrooms after the 6pm speeches to be in to win. If the prize is unclaimed it jackpots for the following week!

MEMBERSHIPS

We apologize for the mistake in last month’s newsletter. Subscriptions to the club are $20 not $10 as previously stated. We believe this is still a very reasonable price, and encourage that all non-playing supporters and non sponsors of the club take out a membership. Margaret Sager is at the club taking memberships each Saturday. Please also ensure all non-members sign in once in the clubrooms.

NOTICES

We are sad to report that Jim Cameron passed away after battling leukemia last month. The Feilding Rugby Club would like to pass on its sympathies again to the Cameron family after the passing of Jim last month. Jim was a great yellows man having played, coached and administered at the club for many years. The turnout at the funeral was a indication of the level of respect Jim had in the community and he will be sorely missed.

Our sympathies also go to Matt Rakatau and family after the passing of his mother last month. The club was saddened to hear the news and understand that she will be missed by many. Our thoughts are with Matt and his family at this tough time.

ODD BITS

Congratulations goes to Zane Kitchen for taking out the first Yellow’s Texas Hold’em Poker night at the clubrooms last Friday the 9th of April. Zane battled it out in the final against Mitchell Crosswell to take home $150 cash. Well done Zane. The club is looking to host further poker nights this season so keep an eye out for notices.

COMMITTEE and VOLUNTEERS

Those of you who have been on committees know the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes so we are always on the look out for volunteers to help with keeping the club running smoothly.  If we don’t ask, don’t assume we won’t accept your help. So please feel free to offer your services to anyone on the committee.
